Financial Pains - Embrace Them!

Have you ever gone to the gym in an effort to shed some weight? Or maybe, you just bought an exercise machine and then worked out at home. No matter where you perform your exercise routine, I am sure that you have experienced the initial muscular pains that come with the first few times of working out. Of course, even though there is pain, you rest assured that something is going right – you are working out and you are losing weight and developing muscles. As the cliché goes, no pain, no gain.

You can actually liken these pains that you feel physically to what you might feel when you put yourself on a financial budget. Imagine this – you are used to spending your income as you wish. Every payday, you’d celebrate with friends or colleagues and head on to your favorite night spot. At the weekend, you would go to the supermarket and do your grocery shopping – ooh you spot something that you feel like buying and just go ahead and put it in the cart. You spend an afternoon at the mall and you spy that new gadget that looks nifty – you go ahead and swipe that card. Or maybe you feel like buying new clothes. Do you see what I am getting at? This kind of lifestyle seems carefree and full of enjoyment. That is, until you gets your credit card bill. Or maybe, when a financial emergency arises and you find out that you do not have enough cash on hand - or even in your savings account – to deal with the need.

So what do you do? Try putting yourself on a budget. It does not have to be stringent but at least make sure that you are saving something in case a rainy day arrives. If you try this, though, expect to feel some pains here and there. These pains would probably last for a while, especially if you are used to living a life such as what I described above.

Imagine this now – your pay cheque arrives. Instead of automatically heading on to the bar, maybe you just go home and make yourself a nice dinner. Instead of buying everything you feel like buying at the supermarket, you make your own grocery list and stick to it. When you go to the mall, you do not immediately give in to the urge to buy whatever it is that catches your eye. Instead, what you do is think about your decisions before making purchases.

It would be difficult at first. Perhaps not going out every night with friends may bug you. You might feel bored and restless – deprived even. The same feeling might beset you if you do not give in to your impulses when shopping. You might even feel pitiful. Yet think about it – do you really need all these things? Cutting back on your expenses may literally hurt. Just think back on that old cliché – no pain, no gain. Those little aches that come with budgeting will bring about a lot of pleasure when you realise that you have solid savings.
